A romantic Catskills getaway in October comes down to timing. Go when the color is good, the nights are cold enough for the hot tub, and the crowds haven’t decided on the same weekend you did. As of the September 30 I LOVE NY Fall Foliage Report, the mid and upper Catskills are at the midpoint of change. Windham’s upper elevations are near peak, Tannersville is at about 50%, and Belleayre Mountain in Highmount is at 65%.

That makes the next three weekends a real choice, not a guess. This guide is for two people planning one of them from a cabin in Hunter, NY. It is about picking the right weekend and keeping the days light. For the general case against overpacking any cabin weekend, read Keep the Weekend Intentionally Small. This post is the October version, built around dates.

Pick your weekend

Hunter Mountain’s fall festival, Colors in the Catskills, sets the rhythm in town, with a different theme each weekend. That affects how busy your weekend will be, so it belongs in the plan:

WeekendWhat’s on in HunterWho it suits
October 3–4First Leaves weekend; festival Sat 11 a.m.–6 p.m., Sun 11 a.m.–5 p.m., free admissionCouples who want the high-ground color now and don’t mind company
October 10–12 (Columbus Day Monday)Authentic Oktoberfest weekend, same festival hoursA three-night trip, if you book early and plan around the busiest days
October 17–18Costume Takeover, the festival’s last weekendCouples who would trade some color for a quieter town. Foliage by then is not guaranteed

If you want the leaves, go sooner. If you want quiet, go midweek, any week. A Sunday-to-Tuesday stay misses every festival day and gets you the same mountains with fewer people on the road.

Book the weekend for the leaves. Plan the evenings for each other.

Day one: arrive in daylight, then stay put

The best first evening asks nothing of you. Arrive before dark so you can see the property and the road in daylight. Unpack, then don’t get back in the car. In October that means a fire, a soak and dinner you brought with you. Clove Creek has a hot tub, a sauna and a Solo Stove fire pit, and a cold Catskills night is when they earn their keep.

If you are shopping on the way, the farm stands make better date food than a grocery run. Our apple picking guide lists the stands and markets we could verify this season, with hours. A pie from a Greene County orchard stand and a jug of cider cover dessert for two nights.

Day two: one shared outing

Pick one thing to do together and give it the whole middle of the day. Three that work in October:

Go up the mountain. The Scenic SkyRide at Hunter puts you above the color. Check Hunter’s own calendar for the day’s hours, because published listings disagree. Our Hunter Mountain fall foliage guide covers this week’s report town by town.

Drive the clove, slowly. Route 23A through Kaaterskill Clove is short and steep, with walls of trees on both sides. Use marked parking only, never the travel lane, and treat it as a drive to take slowly.

Make it a farm morning. Pakatakan Farmers’ Market runs Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through October 10 in the Kelly Round Barn in Halcottsville. Or drive to Stone Ridge Orchard, whose Farm Bar pours cider flights on weekend afternoons in September and October. Both are proper drives from Hunter, so make the trip the date rather than a stop on the way to something else.

Then go back. A romantic weekend is not measured in overlooks. Be home before the light goes, with the evening still ahead of you.

Day three: the slow morning

Leave the last morning unscheduled. Coffee outside if it’s dry, one more soak if it isn’t, and a checkout time you aren’t racing. If you are staying through Columbus Day Monday, the drive home is the thing to plan around. Leave early or late, not when everyone else does.

Route 214: little to no cell service. Download maps before entering the corridor. Clove Creek has Wi-Fi and supports Wi-Fi calling; that does not give your phone coverage on the road.

Download offline maps before you leave. Cell coverage in the hollows is unreliable, and part of the point is that nobody can reach you there.

Three ways to spoil it

Chasing peak across counties. Windham, Highmount, Delhi and Sharon Springs all made this week’s report. Trying to see all four in a weekend turns a getaway into a road trip with a hot tub at the end. Pick one direction per day.

Driving the clove after dark. Route 23A is a daylight road. So are the unlit back roads around any Catskills cabin. Plan the outing so you are home before sunset, not racing it.

Booking the busiest day without meaning to. The Saturday of Columbus Day weekend in a festival town is not a quiet day. That is fine if you want the energy. If you don’t, shift the stay by a day and miss most of it. The mountains don’t change, but the traffic does.

What to pack for two

Cold-weather layers for the evenings, whatever the daytime forecast says. Swimsuits for the hot tub. Something warm to wrap up in between the tub and the fire. A paper map or a downloaded one. Groceries for one dinner you’ll cook together, so the first night doesn’t depend on a restaurant’s shoulder-season hours. Our midweek food guide explains why those hours shift in fall.

Why this works in October

Spring and summer weekends in the Catskills are good. October ones are better for couples for three plain reasons. The color gives every drive a purpose. The cold makes a hot tub and a fire the best part of the day instead of an amenity on a listing. And the season is short, so you aren’t just booking “sometime.” The Wednesday report tells you whether this is the week.

It also helps that October rewards doing less. A drive that takes an hour in July takes an afternoon in peak week, because you keep pulling over. Build that into the day. Plan one outing, and let the stops along the way be the date.

If the report says the high ground is near peak, go up. If it says the valleys are catching up, stay low and drive less. Either way, the plan stays the same: one outing a day, and evenings at the cabin.
