Plan Food Around Midweek Hours in the Catskills

It is 8:40 on a Wednesday night, and the sign on the door says closed. That happens here. Not because the town is sleepy, but because a lot of Catskills kitchens are staffed for the weekend and rest in the middle of the week. Here are some notes to plan food around midweek hours in the Catskills,

So plan for it. Check hours on the day you go, eat one good meal in town, and treat the cabin kitchen as part of the trip, not a fallback you settle for. From Clove Creek Cabin in Lanesville, Phoenicia is about seven minutes south, and Hunter and Tannersville are about as close to the north. This guide names places to eat and browse in those towns and gives each one an honest status: confirmed on the operator’s own site, or a lead you still need to check.

Read this first: the midweek pattern

Country House Realty’s guide to restaurants open midweek puts it plainly: in Catskills and Hudson Valley towns, a surprising number of eateries close Monday through Wednesday, and in winter some close Thursday too. The guide was last updated December 20, 2024, and it tells readers to confirm schedules on each restaurant’s own site. We treat it the same way. It is a map of likely options, not a list of current hours.

Wednesday is the night to plan most carefully. Even the steadiest Phoenicia breakfast stop takes Wednesday off.

Wednesday isn’t broken. It just doesn’t run on brunch hours.

Phoenicia (Ulster County): the closest Main Street

Phoenicia is the easy one. Seven minutes from the cabin, a walkable Main Street, street parking along it and on the side streets. If you only leave the cabin once, this is probably where you go.

Phoenicia Diner, 5681 State Route 28. Its own site currently says it is open 8am–6pm every day except Wednesday, first come, first served, with no reservations. On a fall Saturday, that means arriving early or expecting to wait. On a Wednesday, it means going somewhere else. phoeniciadiner.com

Bettina Cafe & Market, on Main Street. Its FAQ lists breakfast, brunch and lunch 9am–3pm Thursday and Friday and 8am–3pm Saturday and Sunday, notes that hours shift by season, and says seating is first come, first served. It lists no Monday–Wednesday hours, so plan around it midweek. The market side sells pantry items and local goods, which helps if you are stocking the cabin. bettinacafe.com

Brio’s is on our own nearby list at about seven miles. The Country House guide listed it as open Monday–Thursday in December 2024. We couldn’t confirm current hours on its site, so check a current listing before you count on it for a midweek dinner.

For browsing, the Phoenicia business directory lists Phoenicia Arts & Antiques at 41 Main Street, a multi-merchant market and gallery, and Small Town Happy Catskills Clothing Co. at 38 Main Street, which sells clothes and vintage home goods. Out on Route 28 in Mount Tremper, it lists Phoenicia Soap Co. and Custom Leather Creations. The directory gives names and addresses, not open days. Small shops keep small-shop hours, so check before you plan an afternoon around one.

Hunter and Tannersville (Greene County)

North on 214, the Hunter–Tannersville Main Street feels different: ski town, lodge dining rooms, a few places with Alpine styling. Our Bavarian day-trip piece covers that side of it. For food, pick one stop, not a crawl.

• Tabla: listed Monday and Thursday evenings. Check current hours.
• Scribner’s Lodge: listed with breakfast and lunch Monday–Thursday and dinner Wednesday and Thursday. Check current hours.
• Jessie’s Harvest House: listed Tuesday–Thursday evenings. Check current hours.
• Last Chance Cheese Cafe: listed Mondays. Check current hours.

Tops Friendly Market in Tannersville is the nearest grocery store to the cabin, 6.9 miles by the stay page. If you shop on the way in, Friday dinner is sorted before the corridor loses signal.

Woodstock (Ulster County): one browse and one plate

Woodstock is about 25 minutes from Clove Creek. That distance is fine for one planned outing and a bad idea as a second errand after Phoenicia. Go for the galleries and shops on and around Tinker Street, eat one meal, and drive back before dark.

Woodstock was the densest midweek cluster on the Country House list: Good Night, Silvia and Santa Fe were listed Monday–Thursday evenings, and Pearl Moon Wednesday and Thursday. That was December 2024. Check each one before you drive; a 25-minute trip to a dark dining room is exactly the drive this guide is trying to spare you.

Delaware and Schoharie: a separate day

Margaretville and Roxbury, in Delaware County, make a day of their own along Route 30. The same guide listed Trattoria Locale in Margaretville Tuesday–Thursday, and Watershed and Chappie’s Good Food in Roxbury Monday–Thursday. Same rule: check them first.

Schoharie County is where our next cabin is headed. Juniper Ridge, in Jefferson, is coming soon. It isn’t open for stays, and we won’t invent a restaurant list for a cabin guests can’t book yet. If you’re pulled toward the river instead, Hudson and Saugerties are Hudson Valley browsing towns, better as a planned day than a detour. Hudson is in Columbia County; there is no Hudson County in New York.

The cabin dinner: a real plan B

Here is what makes a Wednesday easy at Clove Creek: it doesn’t depend on anyone else’s hours.

Shop in Tannersville or at the Phoenicia Supermarket on Main Street, one of the directory’s listings. Buy for two nights, not one, and let the pizza oven decide dinner. Or grill, then eat at the round table with the fireplace going. A dinner out is great. It doesn’t have to happen every night.

A practical rhythm for a midweek stay: coffee and a Main Street walk in Phoenicia on a day the diner is open, one dinner out on the night your chosen restaurant confirms it is serving, and everything else at the cabin. Screenshot the hours while you still have service.
